Square Recessed Lighting FAQ

• Are these products customizable?

  Yes. Alcon Lighting specializes in specification-grade products built to suit commercial, hospitality and high-end residential projects. Fixtures generally offer options for:

  • Trim style and finish, with custom RAL finishes available upon request
  • Reflector finish
  • Open or lensed
  • Color temperature or color tuning controls
  • Beam spread
  • Dimming
  • Housing
  • Light direction, including direct downlight, adjustable and wall wash
  • Optional features, such as occupancy sensors and emergency battery backup

  Use the specification sheet to understand and find ordering information for the features you require. If you do not see a feature you need, call us. Additional customization options may be available upon request.

  What housing options can I specify for these can lights?

  Please refer to the specification sheet for housing options available for each product. In general, most of products have several options based on the type of installation:

  • New construction housing that’s non-IC rated suits installations where contact with insulation is not a concern
  • IC-rated new construction housing offers safety and efficiency when the installation requires contact with insulation
  • Fire-rated new construction housing offers added protection in areas that require fire integrity
  • For retrofit projects, you can also opt for no housing for easier installation

  Some products also feature shallow or super shallow housing profiles designed for low plenums.

  What color temperature controls do you offer?

  Color temperature options vary by product. Most products offer static or field adjustable color temperature options and at least one color tuning option:

  • Three or five-position color temperature selection controls provide set color temperatures controlled by a switch
  • Dim-to-warn color tuning provides color temperature controls from 1800K to 2700K
  • Tunable-white controls allow occupants to control color temperature from 2700K to 5000K
  • RGBW color-changing controls offer RGB color selection with tunable white controls

• Are these recessed lights suitable for outdoor use?

  Many products featured in this catalog are damp or wet location-rated. A damp location rating means a product is suitable for use outdoors under cover, while a wet location-rated product is safe for direct exposure to rain and snow.

  In some cases, the wet location rating may be optional. Refer to Options on the specification sheet when ordering lights for outdoor use to specify wet location.

  What features can I specify to reduce glare from downlights?

  For downlights that offer open and lensed options, choose the lensed option. Most of our lensed downlights have frosted lenses designed to reduce glare. Baffle reflectors also control light distribution, helping to reduce glare. Choosing a wider beam spread can also help minimize glare, but plan your layout carefully to avoid shadowing between fixtures.

  Do your products offer universal dimming compatibility?

  Yes. Most products in this catalog are compatible with 0-10V, ELV and TRIAC drivers. Some products are also compatible with MLV systems. Please check Dimming on the specification sheet to affirm a product is compatible.
