Linear Pendant Lighting FAQ

• What are linear suspension or pendant lights?

  Linear suspension lights, also known as linear pendants or suspended linear lights, hang from the ceiling, usually suspended by a cable or stem.

  What value does suspension lighting provide?

  Unlike recessed lighting or surface-mount ceiling lights, suspension lighting allows for downlighting and uplighting from the same fixture. This can provide the necessary lumens to properly light a room while minimizing glare and eyestrain typically associated with direct downlighting.

  Pendant lighting with adjustable cable suspension also allows for precise height positioning of fixtures.

  Can I control the level of downlighting and uplighting provided by a fixture?

  Yes. Most of the products featured in this catalog allow you to select the percentage of light devoted to downlighting and uplighting. You can also specify products for downlighting or uplighting only.

  Some fixtures may also offer light directional control. You can use a DIP switch to adjust the amount of light allotted for downlighting and uplighting in the field.

  Can I mount these products in continuous runs?

  Yes. Most linear pendants featured in this catalog offer tandem mounting for seamless, continuous runs. Continuous runs may be limited to a certain length at a specific voltage. Refer to the specification sheet for the maximum run length allowed for each product.

  Some products offer fully illuminated corner and cross connectors, allowing you to create geometric shapes and original designs with suspension lighting.

  Which applications use uplighting?

  Uplighting can be beneficial in office and classroom applications because it minimizes glare for a more work-conducive environment.

• Can I use linear pendant lights on a sloped ceiling?

  Yes. An aircraft cable canopy kit for sloped and vaulted ceilings allows pendant lights to hang from a sloped ceiling. This kit has a 180º adjustable gripper which rotates to securely suspend the light.

  Can I customize your linear pendant lights?

  Yes. Alcon Lighting builds products to specification, allowing you to fully customize appearance and performance of lighting. Customization options include:

  • Length
  • Finish color, including custom RAL color finishes
  • Lens type
  • Suspension kit type
  • Light direction
  • Color temperature and color tuning control options

  What is the value of LED?

  LED lighting offers improved efficiency over other types of lighting. Bulbs last up to 50 times longer than incandescent lights and 25 times longer than halogen. LED lights offer greater control and improved color representation versus fluorescent bulbs, and convert less energy to heat, making them an excellent choice for retrofit projects.

  For the architect and designer, LED lighting makes it easier to meet Lighting Power Allowance (LPA) standards for buildings, which may be required for code compliance in some places and can also provide tax savings.

  Can I use these pendant lights for government, military or municipal contract projects?

  Are these products suitable for outdoor use?

  Many featured pendant lights are damp location-rated, making them suitable for outdoor use under cover. Products that are wet location-rated can withstand direct exposure to rain and snow.
