Recessed Linear Lighting FAQ

• What is the difference between recessed linear lights, strip lights and channel lights?

  Although these terms are often interchangeably used, they can refer to different products. Pay attention to the specification sheet to choose the correct product for your purchase

  • Recessed linear lights refer to any fixture embedded into a surface, such as a ceiling, wall or floor. The recessed light is favored for aesthetic appeal and the ability to integrate into the architectural design
  • Strip lights can refer to recessed lighting, but may also refer to products known as tape lights. Tape lights are generally not recessed, mounting to a surface, such as underneath a cabinet. The strip light may also be flexible, allowing light to bend around corners
  • Channel lights offer the flexibility of tape lights embedded into a channel. The channel may include diffusers to soften light, eliminate hotspots and yield better heat management
  How does linear recessed LED lighting add value to commercial projects?

  Linear recessed lighting adds value by providing an unobtrusive aesthetic that blends into various architectural elements. LED technology ensures optimal lighting quality and improved color rendering. This type of fixture offers wall wash, wall grazer and downlighting options.

  Can I connect linear recessed lights for continuous runs?

  Yes. Most products featured here offer tandem mounting with male and female connectors for seamless, continuous runs of any length. We also offer seamless ceiling-to-wall connections and angled connectors for geometric designs.

  What recessed mounting options do you offer?

  Most of our recessed linear products mount—with or without trim—into hard ceilings, such as drywall, soffits or walls. In-grade linear lights mount into flooring. Some fixtures also offer T-bar and screw-slot mounting compatible with Armstrong and other grid ceilings. Please refer to the specification sheet for mounting options available for each product.

  Can I create shapes with strip lighting?

  Yes. You can use fully illuminated 90° and 135° corner joints to create various shapes. Standard shapes include squares, crosses, rectangles and octagons. We can also fabricate custom angle joints for original designs.

• Can I install recessed linear lights on the wall and ceiling?

  Yes. You can install Alcon Lighting’s fixtures in the wall, ceiling or floor. You can also have a continuous run starting in the ceiling and running down the wall and across the floor.

  What is wall-wash lighting?

  Recessed linear wall wash lights have a reflector inside the fixture that directs light at an angle onto the adjacent wall. Wall wash lights are ideal for illuminating art, displays, signage, textures and other architectural elements.

  After installation, will you only see the light strip, or is there a border around it?

  It depends on the type of recessed light fixture. Alcon Lighting carries borderless fixtures, also known as mud-in, flangeless or trimless, which only display a strip of light. Flanged light fixtures have visible trim with a selection of finish options available.

  Are your recessed linear lights customizable?

  Yes. Alcon Lighting builds lights to specification. You can specify most recessed linear lights by length, trim finish, color temperature and color tuning controls, driver and lumen package. You can also add special features, such as emergency battery backup and Title 24-compliant sensors. Please refer to the specification sheet for customization options available on each fixture.
