Surface Mounted Lighting FAQ
-
Surface-mounted lighting is varied and versatile, making it ideal for a range of commercial applications, including:
- Retail: Flush mount fixtures provide ambient lighting, while monopoint spotlights and track lights highlight products and displays
- Hospitality and dining: Create the ideal atmosphere with ambient surface-mounted lighting featuring color tuning and universal dimming
- Art galleries and studios: Use track lighting and monopoint spotlights to direct light as needed for exhibits and shows
- Offices: Surface-mount lighting with glare-reducing features, such as acrylic lenses and louvers, light workspaces while reducing eye strain
- Multi-family dwellings: Flush-mount and surface-mounted fixtures are ideal for corridors and common areas
The two terms are often used interchangeably but have slightly different meanings and applications.
- As the name indicates, a flush-mount fixture sits flush with the surface of a ceiling or wall. There is no gap between the surface and the fixture. This is beneficial in spaces with lower ceilings or where a seamless appearance is desired
- By contrast, a surface-mount fixture is mounted to the ceiling, but there can be a gap between the surface and the light. Or, in the case of monopoint spotlights and track lighting, the fixture may swivel to direct light as needed
LED lighting offers efficiency, longevity and improved performance. It's a cost-effective solution for commercial spaces, ensuring bright, consistent illumination while minimizing maintenance and bulb replacements. It also offers advanced color temperature controls and more accurate color rendering than fluorescent lighting.
Yes, emergency backup is available as an option with most Alcon Lighting suspension lights, either with an integrated or remote emergency battery.

To reduce glare from downlights and other surface-mounted products, choose lighting with glare-reducing lenses, such as frosted acrylic lenses or louvers. Choosing the appropriate beam spread can also reduce glare. Talk to an Alcon Lighting specification sales consultant for assistance.
Color temperature controls vary by product. Please refer to the specification sheet for control options offered on each product. Controls range from a color temperature switch that allows lighting to be field-adjusted between three to five set color temperatures to full RGBW color tuning controlled via RF remote, DMX wall control, WiFi or Bluetooth app.
